5 Health Benefits of Sea Moss

Sea moss also knows as red seaweed, irish moss or intertidal seaweed comes in a variety of colors such as green, brown, red, purple, black. The sea moss leaves are spiny and slimy due to the presence of a gelatinous carbohydrate called carrageenan. Carrageenan for hundreds of years has been used to thicken soups and stews.

The most common type of sea moss is the one that grows in warm water, the irish moss, which is red in color. Red sea moss has a large number of minerals and vitamins present in them. They’re also low in calories, sugar, and fat.

Health Benefits of the Sea Moss

Nutritionists found out the health benefits of sea moss, especially in women, is due to the presence of iodine, calcium, vitamin B, and zinc. Here are 5 reported health benefits of sea moss.

Promotes fertility

Sea moss contains a large amount of iodine making it perfect for the restoration of thyroid activity. Your thyroid health is important. It affects your menstrual cycle, sleep, central and peripheral nervous system. It also produces hormones that are responsible for the growth, metabolism, and overall development of your body. Thyroid hormones imbalances cause issues with growth and fertility and are one of the main causes of infertility in women. The presence of iodine in sea moss helps promote thyroid health.

Improves weight loss and metabolism

For my ladies that want to lose weight faster, sea moss can be used for increased metabolism. The presence of high iodine guarantees your thyroids are getting the nutrients needed to increase metabolism effectively. It can also help you feel longer.

Increases sex drive:

Sea moss increases sex drive by promoting smooth circulation in the reproductive systems. The sea vegetable is high in zinc, which is an essential mineral that our bodies don’t produce. Zinc promotes a  healthy reproductive system. You might not be taking high zinc-containing foods if you don’t have a meal plan or diet in place. However, sea moss is a perfect natural remedy for low libido.

Improves digestive health

The sea vegetable has a thick consistency that smoothens out the mucus membranes during digestion. Here is how it works. The texture coats your mucus membrane thereby preventing diseases like ulcers. Findings have shown that apart from preventing ulcers, sea moss provides prebiotic benefits during digestion. Prebiotic functions include the removal of gut bacteria and stimulation of fatty acid production.

Improves overall mood

Nothing is more frustrating than getting irritated without being able to point to the source. We have all woken up on the wrong side of the bed. One reason for the frequent mood changes can be a deficiency of potassium and magnesium in your diet. Potassium and magnesium play a vital role in brain function and mood. Studies report low levels of these minerals have been linked to depression and mood disturbances.

Here’s a fun fact, sea moss contains 2 times more potassium than the amount found in an average-sized banana and twice lesser calories.

Just remember, excess magnesium and potassium do not store in our bodies for long periods. So you’ll need to include these minerals in your diet often. One of the most effective ways to do this with sea moss is to drink a dose of sea moss every day.

How to prepare sea moss

Sea moss can be prepared in many ways. You can purchase it dried, in raw form, powder form, pills or and as a gel. It can be purchased at your local herbal health food stores or online stores like amazon. One of the most popular ways to consume sea moss is in gel form. You can prepare your own gel at right at home, it is very easy.

Here’s how:

Place the dried sea moss in a large bowl, cover it with water, and massage the sea moss. Be sure to remove any visible dirt and debris. Repeat this step.

Place the sea moss in a large bowl and cover the sea moss completely with filtered or spring water. Do not use tap water. Allow the sea moss to soak for 12-24 hours at room temperature.

Add the sea moss and the water from you soaked it into your blender. Only add enough water for your desired gel thickness.

Blend until it is smooth then transfer the sea moss into an airtight container/mason jar, and refrigerate. The sea moss gel will thicken in the fridge after 2 hours.

You can store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 month or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Enjoy 1-2 tablespoons a day in smoothies, tea, coffee, soups, jams, etc. You can also add it to your skin and hair mask as well as use it as a thickening agent for stews. The powder form of sea moss works well when adding it to beverages, yogurt, or oatmeal.

The taste is salty and light so it works best with creamy ingredients like vanilla, almond milk, cinnamon, and coconut milk.
